Adam’s Feature in InsideOut Magazine

In the February issue of InsideOut Magazine I was invited to be a part of their ‘Experts & Insiders Panel’ and asked to give some advice and commentary on creating small spaces.  I love the challenge of working within the confines of a petite outdoor space because making them work requires some strategic design.

Here’s what I had to say:

“Generally, small outdoor spaces such as balconies, courtyards and patios are in close proximity to the home, so it’s important to draw design ideas from the architecture and interiors when selecting materials, colours and furnishings.

I recommend keeping the design simple yet with strong definition and use good quality raw materials. Don’t use too many materials mixed together – simplicity is the key in a small space – ensure the palette is easy to on the eye and to live in.

On the other hand, a varied plant palette on the other hand, allows the space to feel soft, lush and less rigid. I find dark, moody colours allow the boundaries to recede and give depth to plant foliage which helps to make a smaller space appear larger.
