Natural Paints
Peter Lewis’ Porter’s Paints
Founder of the hugely successful brand, Porter’s Paints, Peter Lewis has always been on a quest, experimenting and innovating in the Australian paint trade for more than 30 years. After a brief hiatus from the industry, he is now on a mission to make eco-friendly, plant-based paints using natural pigment powders. Peter has recently launched Peter Lewis Paints - better for our health and the health of our planet.
Peter believes that Mother Nature is by far the most intelligent and creative artist there is, and in many ways, Peter Lewis Paints is a homage to her — as well as to past and future generations.
What made you want to begin another paint brand Pete?
Peter: I wanted to introduce a range of all-natural paints and finishes that have true beauty to the Australian Market.
Apart from the sustainable qualities, what is it about the mineral pigments? - are the colours more intense?
Peter: If we grind the mineral pigments to keep their characteristics, they then have far more reaction with light and shadow, giving the colours a true wonder.
Are any of the colours made from mineral pigments found in Australia? If so, which?
Peter: Currently, the minerals pigments are sourced from Europe, Greece and Iran, but we are investigating some very exciting iron oxide pigments from Australia. Stay tuned….
Why is it important to you that this is a natural paint range?
Peter: There are a number of reasons….
1. The plant based and mineral silicate based emulsions, tinted with our ground pigments, perform as well as, if not better than, conventional paints, and the pigments give such a difference in colour tone.
2. There is no smell or harm for the applicators or those living in the painted spaces.
3. Durability.
4. All the ingredients used are plant based or food grade.
5. It’s important to me that we look after the planet for future generations.
6. We are transparent about the ingredients we use.
