Black Lace Elderberry

Sambucus Nigra

The award-winning Sambucus nigra Black Lace (Elderberry) is famous for its dark, dramatic foliage that is deeply cut, giving a delicate lacy appearance.  This large, upright deciduous shrub has striking, lacy, purple-black leaves from spring through to autumn.

It is a tough, adaptable and stunning, rounded shrub is perfect planted on its own or for mixed borders, hedges or screens.  This black beauty produces flattish sprays of small lemon-scented, pale pink flowers in summer and purple-black berries ripening in autumn. Compared to the common elder, it’s a much more ornamental option.  For best results, grow in moist, well-drained soil in full to partial shade. Cut plants back after fruiting, if desired.
